Hip or buttock pain can be caused by a variety of things:-

  1. The pain can be referred from the facet joints in your spine or sciatic nerve.redbourn physio
  2. The tendon attaching your buttock muscle (Gluteus) to your thigh bone can be a very common source of nasty pain. (Gluteal Tendinopathy)
  3. Sometimes the bursa underlying the gluteal tendon can become inflamed ( Trochanteric Bursitis)
  4. The Hip joint itself can also cause buttock pain.

You may have been diagnosed with Trochanteric Bursitus, Gluteal tendinopathy, Hip arthritis or Piriformis Syndrome.

Our Chartered Physiotherapists will take an in depth history and give you a thorough examination of all the structures that might be contributing to your pain. This will then help your therapist provide you with a clinical diagnosis of the source of your hip/buttock pain and thereafter provide you with the various treatment options and rehab. redbourn physiotherapyThe treatment options advised will be in line with current best evidence based practice. Depending on the source of your pain the treatment programmes will vary. For example we may mobilise your spine and give you spinal exercises or treat the pain locally if it is caused by trigger points in your muscles or give you strengthening exercises if the tendon is overloaded.

We can advise you if you need further investigations or medical referral.

We will also write to your GP if you would like us to inform them of our findings.
